Learn to Skydive FAQs
I already did a tandem. Do I get to skip the tandem and get a price reduction?
No, the AFF tandem is not the same. A tourist tandem is like going to the fair and riding the big dipper. Everything is taken care of, and you’re just along for the ride. On the AFF tandem, you have a laid-down exercise to carry out in freefall (reading an altimeter, etc.), and then the instructor talks you through the canopy ride as you steer the parachute.
What's the difference between the three courses?
Actually, there is only one course, split into three parts. We offer AFF Level 1, which includes all ground training, an introductory tandem, and a Level 1 skydive with two instructors for anyone who wants to try AFF but is not 100% convinced “this is for me.” If it is for you, you can continue with AFF and pay the balance of the course or pay by the jump (level) with no price differential. The AFF full course is for anyone who knows they want to learn to skydive, while the full “A” License adds the additional jumps required onto the AFF training to get to the magic 25 jumps and earn your USPA “A” License
Is it possible to break up the 7-day AFF and 14-day A Licence course into weekends or 2-3 day intervals?
Sure, just try and be as regular as possible to avoid needing extra jumps.
How’s the typical days program?
Day 1 is all-day classes. After that, you need to be available to jump whenever the weather is suitable.
Are there extra costs or hidden charges?
No, everything is included. You will be given a student handout, logbook, and goggles (if you lose or damage the goggles, you will need to buy new ones). Jumpsuit, helmet, altimeter, and parachute are provided, and the parachute is even packed for you after each jump.
What if I fail a level?
You must achieve the set learning objectives on each jump. If you don’t meet the required standard, you will need to repeat that level/jump, and re-jump prices are shown in the price list. We recommend you budget for at least one re-jump on levels 4-7 and hope you don’t need it.
What additional costs can I expect?
You will need USPA membership at some point (around $60 USD), and they will also charge to issue your license once you complete the “A” License syllabus ($35 USD or thereabouts). Once you have qualified, you will need your own equipment.
Why is transport not included?
Quite simply, when you attend the training, we need you to be on site and ready by 08:00 each day. Our tandem buses make many calls from 07:00 to 08:00 and may not arrive at the drop zone until 09:30 or 10:00, by which time you may have missed your first opportunity to jump. Talk to us about where to stay and how we can facilitate your DZ transfers.
What equipment do I need to buy when qualified?
It is good to get your own jumpsuit, helmet, and altimeter to start with. We do rent equipment, but priority is given to those doing AFF or A License training, so there is no guarantee of availability. You should also consider buying your own parachute (rig), as rental equipment may not be available. When you have your own rig, it is like a friend that you know well and can be fairly certain how it will respond in most circumstances.
Does anyone ever fail the course?
Some people quit because they realise this is not for them. Some ace every jump and pass AFF after seven jumps with no re-jumps. Some struggle on a given level, but we will keep going as long as you are prepared to carry on unless we think you are dangerous and likely to hurt yourself. Then, we will recommend stopping. But don’t worry—if you put the effort in, skydiving is easy. You can learn to skydive in six minutes of freefall.
